Not long after graduating from the University of Maryland, in 2004, I was living again in my hometown of Boston. My back and body regularly ached after a long day of work. One of my roommates suggested I strengthen my core and take a Pilates class. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I got hooked. Pilates was rigid but flexible, comprehensive and spiritual. My needs for order and creativity were met. And I felt stronger, more energetic, and witnessed my daily aches and pains diminish. I enjoyed taking Pilates so much, that In 2009, after five years of classes I decided to change professions.
PILATES
Pilates is a way of life, developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Humbertus Pilates. Mr. Pilates designed this method, through much study and research, for himself in order to control his body; a mind over muscle type of control. His full story is fascinating and clearly show he was ahead of his time. One of my favorite snippets is his time spent on the Isle of Man in England, as a prisoner of war during World War I. Left with little to do as a prisoner in a war torn England, Mr. Pilates wasted no time and trained and rehabilitated wounded soldiers. Amidst such darkness and suffering, his method helped bring those he worked with to better health and out of suffering. During the Spanish Flu, none of the soldiers he worked with showed symptoms of the influenza; a testament an augmented immune system from his method, or just luck? The benefits of Pilates are more than just length, strength and tone: the method can be comprehensive.
TEACHING
I am enthusiastic about Pilates, and I’ll share that positivity with you when I teach. I deliver the same to every client in my classes ensuring that set goals and needs are met. I follow a classical approach with contemporary biomechanics when teaching, but always think critically about how an exercise helps the body in front of me. I am always preparing ways to bring challenging, successful and invigorating workouts to all my clients. Pilates changed and strengthened my life, and I am certain it will do the same for you.
I like to believe that in my classes you will receive the utmost of my attention, be challenged, and possibly suffer, but more importantly, come out better. You will receive my encouragement throughout, and attention to your goals and needs. However, though work is surely involved, Pilates can cater to all bodies, and levels.
YOU
Beginner, intermediate, advanced, injured, pregnant, young, old, athletic or totally inactive - Pilates can be and is for everyone.
First time to Pilates? I will work with you so you are comfortable yet challenged and ultimately feel satisfied about the work you put in. I promise I’m not intimidating nor do I bite.
Intermediate or advanced? I bite. Just kidding. No matter your level, or whether we work in person or virtually, your workout will be for you and what you need.
I truly enjoy working with all clientele. Through my years of teaching and learning, I experience great pleasure witnessing my clients get stronger every session; tell me stories of success; make internal connections; and better understand how to control their body in active daily living.
Continuing Education
Continuing my training is important to me, and I do so as often as I can through formal trainings, conferences and attending other professional classes. I have also trained specifically for clients with osteoporosis, rotational sports injuries and scoliosis.
Currently I am an apprentice in Shari Berkowitz's The Vertical Workshop Classical Bridge Training.
